We care a lot

About the welfare of all you boys and girls
We care a lot!
About you people ’cause we’re
Out to save the world!
Yeah!
Well it’s a dirty job but
Someone’s gotta do it
Said, it’s a dirty job but
Someone’s gotta do it
~ Faith No More.
While putting the groceries away today, the lyrics to this fabulous song really landed with me for the first time really.
I actually got it.
We whizz through life, bombarded with information – some of it in the form of art with which we choose to surround ourselves – and how blissfully wonderful when the pain or joy and message of the artist actually lands with us?!
Actually hits the backboard and slaaammmmmm dunks!

Because you are part of the Generative Change Community, I know you care a lot too.

And that means I know you know just how challenging caring a lot can be.

It’s so much easier to walk by that piece of plastic, washed up on the beach.
Much easier to look out the window as the crazy lady in the seat in front of us on the tram abuses women behind us.
Even easier to stick our head in the sand and ignore the ugliness of discrimination in our community.
Life will go on if we do nothing.
It will.
But will it be as light, as bright, as clear and beautiful as it could be if we cared a lot and got dirty?
It will.
Of course it will!
It’s life. It just is.
But us.
Will we feel as light, as bright, as clear and beautiful as we could if we cared a lot and got dirty?
No.
No we will not.
We will talk to ourselves, sometimes constantly, keeping ourselves awake about what we didn’t do, the stand we didn’t make, the commitment to good and great that in doing nothing we broke with ourselves, our community and our children.
We will instead lament the state of the world and all the stuff other people are not doing. We’ll turn to our loved ones and point out their failures and what they should be doing. All the while our soul keeps track, an unwritten audit of the broken commitments to ourselves and to others – the true measure of our success.
To sin by silence when we should protest makes cowards out of men.
~Ella Wheeler Wilcox.
What is called The Bystander Effect, makes cowards of us all.
This Psychology term was born from the Kitty Genovese murder in New York in 1964 where Kitty was murdered in an alley near her home with 12 witnesses to her screams for help.
All did nothing.
Nothing.
I challenge you to BE the person who speaks up, stands up.
We’ve heard it before.
Speak up. Stand up. Stand up for your rights.
Your right to feel like a good and decent person and sleep soundly at night in the peace afforded by commitments honoured.
Your right to stand for dignity and respect – for all people and animals and our planet.
Stand up for your right to create your world.
It’s a dirty job, but someone’s gotta do it.
